Lexington and Richmond, VA, jewelry designers Rebecca and Maureen Worth of SylvanSpirit were named finalists in both the Precious Metal Clay® (PMC) category and in the Swarovski® Special Award category in PMC in the 2002 Saul Bell Design Award competition for jewelry design. Their PMC piece “Appalachian Queen” is a sterling silver and fine silver PMC tiara/necklace, incorporating 18K gold, 24K gold PMC, 14K gold-filled wire and sterling silver wire. The design is accented with white and champagne freshwater pearls and two Swarovski crystals. The Swarovski Special Award finalist piece “Greek Crown” is a silver PMC tiara featuring hand-sculpted PMC flowers. The flowers are hand-brushed and attached to a sterling band using sterling wire. The flowers are finished with freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals. From hundreds of submissions and 25 finalists, Rio Grande honored seven winners and one Grand Prize winner of the second annual Saul Bell Design Award competition at the JCK Las Vegas Show in June. The annual competition honors Rio Grande’s founder, Saul Bell. The competition challenged jewelry designers to create original and innovative pieces in any of four categories. Designers were asked to choose one of four design categories as the foundation of their piece and were allowed to integrate any additional stones or materials into an original, wearable jewelry design.
